home insurance
Question #1:
My nine month old son has an ear infection in both ears. He has done two treatments of antibiotics and they haven't phased it. We were supposed to have a follow up appointment on Tuesday but our insurance coverage ( we have insurance through the state) ended on Friday. We are waiting for an appointment to get our insurance back, but I don't want my son to have to suffer until then. I found several home remedies for adults but I couldn't find any for babies or children. Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Question #2:
I live in NY state if that has any bearing. I am unemployed right now, sending my resume everywhere. My income would be very low if I had one (when I'm employed, it's typically around $18,000-20,000). I currently live at home; parents do not have low-income they're in the middle. We're all about to lose our medical insurance. I think I'd be considered separate income? Because my mo has pre-existing medical conditions, they may be without insurance for a while.. They may be able to get HealthyNY, but it makes you wait 12 months for pre-existing conditions & only covers a dependent up to 23 yr old full time student. I've finished college. I have a condition too (crohn's disease), so I can't be without meds & doctor visits. I went on the Medicaid website, but of course, there's lots of words and it's confusing and not very helpful. Thanks for any input!
Question #3:
I live in California and I got pulled over for passing a flashing red light. I was in a rush to get home because it was 12am which is after curfew. I slowed down enough to look both ways before I passed but the police officer was unreasonable and claimed I was going to kill someone. I had a minor passenger in the car but he simply wrote that I had one passenger in the car and wrote me up for the red light. He set a court date, time, and place and wrote that I need to bring a parent on the side. Is there a way to get out of paying the heavy $367 fine and not letting my parent's insurance company know?
Can I say that I'm going to traffic school and handle all this by mail? The court date is on a school day too.
I'm not saying that I didn't do anything wrong or I wouldn't have gotten a ticket. However the officer was being overly dramatic about the red light and I'm figuring out ways to lessen the blow financially which is also being mature. I didn't ask for judgement and asked for some information and solutions. Thank you.

Question #5:
I'm a 38 year old widow. After my husband died in 2003, I realized that the life insurance money wasn't going to go very far, unless I became extremely frugal. Over the last 7 years I've taken many, many, many classes, and I've obtained quite a few certifications. From Personal Trainer (www.witseducation) to Building/Construction. I've literally saved thousands by being a do it yourself consumer. Some of my family members think that I'm obsessed with being frugal. But that's not the case at all. Why pay someone else to do a job, when I can do it for a fraction of the cost?
I can give you a really good example of what I'm talking about. In 2007, I took a seminar on how to flip houses and buy houses for the back taxes. This was also the same year that I had taken courses in real estate, realtor, and housing inspection. I knew that eventually I wanted to buy a house of my own. Up until 7 months ago I was living in a very cheap, garage apartment near my job. I decided that I was ready to move into my first and only house. I bought a 1,700 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2 bath house, with a two car garage, for the back taxes. The house has a swimming pool. I paid $4,312 for it all. Because of all of the classes I had taken in Building Construction, Interior Design, Cabinet Making, Furniture Making & Refinishing, Sewing. I spent $23,000 to have the home of my dreams. I got a huge tax refund, and I am using that toward an international adoption.
When I had my house warming party everyone from my job, asked me who had decorated my home. I proudly told them that I had did it myself. I also told everyone that I had made all of the food as well. Everyone was shocked, because they thought I had paid a professional to do it all for me. Nope it was all my hard work. I love that I can do things for myself, and I know that it will be done right.
So I'm asking all of the people out there reading my question: Is there anything wrong with being a do it yourself consumer?
Question #6:
This is long, but I really need help.
After a car accident 12 years ago I was denied SS Disability. (2 ruptured discs etc.) I did not pursue the SSDI. I worked through the pain, worked for the last 10 years (always in pain, but functioning) going from machinist to truck driver to dispatcher. My back pain was slowly getting worse. My last two jobs closed their doors (Michigan economy) and I collected unemployment and went to school to become a certified Pharmacy tech. (done with classes, just have to schedule test). My unemployment has run out. No income. I do get food stamps. I have sold everything I have of value. I own my home but owe about what I could sell it for. I also have a car I am making payments on.
I have missed several classes due to pain, went to the Dr. and had an MRI and an EMG. There is much more damage now. 3 ruptured disks, effacement between 4 vertebras, impingement that is pinching nerves, and arthritis in those disks and the 2 above and below. No reflexes in both legs now and right leg “gives out” (dead leg/doesn’t listen to my brain). Dr. says nerve damage and I need surgery NOW (LOL, No $$$ and no insurance) I am trying to buy time with spinal epidural shots. (One so far, not fun). The muscle relaxers leave me pretty loopy.
I am 45, widowed (husband was 61) and need to get on SSDI badly. I owe $3000. for the tests and I put the epidural on a credit card ($575 each, may need 3 total) No children at home so no Medicare/Medicaid.
I am hoping to find a Pharmacy that will hire me part time/flex time where I can sit a bit, stand a bit, etc… (A lot to ask, I know)
Should I hire a lawyer right off the bat or try to do it myself, get denied then get a lawyer? What are my chances of getting SSDI? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Question #7:
Hi,
I just bought my first house and my boyfriend did not sign; therefore the house is in my name only.
I will be paying the down payment, mortgage, home insurance, taxes and other things. He will be living with me in my house but I do not want to be Comon Law so if ever we leave each other, he will not take half of my proprety and my things. What should I do in this situation? I am going to see a Notary (I think that the name, sorry im french) the person who I will meet and sign the final papers with the person who are selling the house and that is when I get the keys.
Anyway, Should I make a contract of some sort? Mention this to my Notary? He does not change his address? I want this to be MY house and not ours. I bought it myself, it's my mortgage, everything will be under MY name. all the bills will have my nae on them.
Anyone has any comments on this ?? I really need help.
Thanks
I am not living in the house yet, only in November 2010. He will come live there with me but it's my house, so after a year, we will be comon law ? which means, he can have half of my proprety ?
Question #8:
I am helping my friend expedite a fire insurance claim on her house which sustained fire damage about two years ago. She is trying to get her claim resolved to have repairs made to her home - However- according to a supervisor who works for the insurance company, there was an adjuster sent out to the property when the fire took place who stated that the replacement cost would be $47,000 with a $20,000 recoverable depreciation amount...So total would be $67,000 available for repairs based on the adjusters numbers.
Several contractors have been sent out to the property who say that the damage sustained by the fire would be well over $100K in labor and materials to repair the property for the fire damage,
The issue we are having is that the insurance company is saying that she had 180 days to dispute the claim made by the adjuster, but within that time frame the homeowner has been in the hospital fighting kidney failure and was unaware of the window she was given to respond to the insurance company.
Since the fire incident took place in 2008 the insurance company is saying that additional ware and tare has probably taken its toll on the property in terms of water damage from rain, wind, etc. First off I find that argument to be irrelevant due to the fact that common sense tells me that water is used to put the fire out to begin with so water damage would have been sustained regardless. Plus even the contractors say that the whole house would practically need to be replaced due to the fire and it would also need to be updated according to present day codes since the property is so old.
Is there anything that can be done so she can so she can get the full amount needed to restore her home? The person who is handling her claim is making it near impossible to get even the simplest of questions answered. Also, the homeowner is due back in the hospital soon for more medical treatment and she wants to get this resolved as soon as possible.
Any help or advice with this would be greatly appreciated.
I forgot to mention the is a California claim
Question #9:
First: painter. I know if you suck at painting, you will be poor. But if you are actually decent and people pay to see your exhibits will you have financial stability? Will you have money to raise a family and get insurance coverage? do painters live at home and are hermits?
Second: graphic designer. The graphic designer probably makes posters and commercials and brochures for their design firm. Is this an accurate description? and do you get benefits and good money?
lastly and really important: game art design. I like to play video games, and i hear there is alot of money in the gaming industry. I prefer game art over game mechanics any day. But is it risky? do you get paid enough? do you get benefits? are your co-workers most likely eccentric and awkward or are they normal?
Question #10:
I am currently going to college taking night classes. During the day I want to open a small dog day care in my home for people that work all day. I have a really large back yard with a lot of shade. My limit is 3 or 4 dogs max so I can give them each all of my attention. Of course I will want proof of updates on the shots and make sure they are spayed or neutered. I am sure there are a lot of other things I need to take into consideration so I am going to make sure to get fully educated first, but are there also some sort of isnurance I need as well? Thanks
Question #11:
first thing you lose when you get really sick is your job. To get on Medicaid you would first have to have a fire sale of you home, car and all of your assets. You cannot have more than 300 dollars in assets.
Some people do not know the difference between Medicare and Medicaid.

Question #12:
My husband and I have been married a little over a year (15 months). We currently live in the house that he and his ex wife lived in prior to their divorce (they lived there for 8 months before he left and they divorced.) The house was and still is in his name only, so he kept it (and the mortgage of course.) His ex didn’t work, lied and manipulated him through their sons for the entire length of their marriage, she drank heavily, took pain pills for recreation and smoked weed regularly, while he worked 60 hrs a week and footed the bill for her habits and all the household bills. His two grown sons also lived there and worked sporadically and didn’t contribute financially to the household (no rent, groceries etc). He supported 4 adults. Fast forward to now, we are married, I have a good job that I have been at for 14 years; he and I make a good living financially together. I pull my weight in this relationship in every way. Recently, we had a minor issue with the mortgage company and the house insurance and I found out that the closing for the house was on their anniversary….he bought the house in the same year that he bought her a car for her birthday (his father had died and left him some money and this was part of the way he spent it - by buying his ex a car (she kept telling him that she would get a job if she had her own car….she got the car…..she didn’t get a job, didn’t even look for one) and coming up with a sizable down payment to buy the house (a new construction by the way…..it is 3 years old this month). I did not want to live in the house, the only reason that we moved into it was because there was and is very little chance of him selling the house with the housing market in the toilet and unemployment rampant. He also would not be able to recover the $10,000 down payment he made towards getting the house with the economy so bad, but he was still responsible for the payment. It was purely a smart financial decision, but a hard emotional one. To me, it seems like I am living in (and paying half the payment for) HER anniversary present. He told me that it was not planned that way…that it just happened that the papers were signed on that day. I feel like he GAVE her the house for their anniversary the same way he GAVE her a car for her birthday. My logical part of the brain tells me that it won’t be like this forever. We knew that moving into the house would be temporary and that we wanted OUR own home……but it is like the house is toxic to me. I don’t think I realized how hard it would be. We have lived there 13 months. How do I deal with this? He is a good man and I don’t want to ruin this marriage over something that other’s see as trivial. I had a friend of mine tell me that it’s not like they raised their kids there and it’s full of those memories. That they only lived there a few months before he left and filed for divorce, they were probably not good months to him if he wanted to get out so badly. I understand that, but am I wrong for wanting something that I don’t feel like is a leftover or a crumb from his past??? HELP!!!!!!
say it all..I do not compare myself to his ex or our relationship to their relationship..there is NO comparision. I am clearly the winner all the way around. Perhaps it is frustration more than anything at things I can't control (the economy) keeping us from be able to do the things we want to do (sell the house and buy or own.)
...and buy OUR own. Sorry
craig b and highnlow...................go to hell. Thanks for the abuse........I asked for help and got smartass answers. Thank God I'm not you.
Some things I should have added but left off: I was a single parent for 11 years and owned my own home which I sold so that we could buy our own together. I raised my children in that home and it was hard to do. Also my name is on the deed (title) of the house, he added it the week after we got married and I DO pay for half of it, so I am entitled to that. People that are saying “Grow up” need to realize that unless you find yourself in a situation YOU have no idea how things you make you feel. Logically, I am doing what I have to do to survive for now, but it is frustrating to work every day and still have to wait to have the things you want to have while others seem to have it handed to them and didn’t do a damn thing to deserve it. YOU grow up!
Everything in it is new, as she took everything as part of the “payoff” for her to go. It was crappy anyway as he was the only income. I bought and paid for the new furniture, new rugs and everything. I have decorated it and it is beautiful. People that knew them before (like their sons) are amazed that it looks so different. By the way I am educated with a college degree in marketing so please some of you stop implying I am of low intelligence. I have my own IRA, 401K and insurance, my car is in my name …..I don’t rely on him to get me by. Logically I understand what the situation is and I accept that it is temporary…..I was just thrown a curve about the date. She is a parasitic personality that can’t survive unless she is attached to something stronger while I, on the other hand, lived alone while raising two kids, working full time and completing my degree. I realize that is the frustration more than anything that is bothering me.
To the ones that replied with good intentions Thank You for your input. It is easy to see when the emotions are removed.
Question #13:
First Wave: Expiration of 2001 and 2003 Tax Relief
In 2001 and 2003, the GOP Congress enacted several tax cuts for investors, small business owners, and families. These will all expire on January 1, 2011:
Personal income tax rates will rise. The top income tax rate will rise from 35 to 39.6 percent (this is also the rate at which two-thirds of small business profits are taxed). The lowest rate will rise from 10 to 15 percent. All the rates in between will also rise. Itemized deductions and personal exemptions will again phase out, which has the same mathematical effect as higher marginal tax rates. The full list of marginal rate hikes is below:
- The 10% bracket rises to an expanded 15%
- The 25% bracket rises to 28%
- The 28% bracket rises to 31%
- The 33% bracket rises to 36%
- The 35% bracket rises to 39.6%
Higher taxes on marriage and family. The “marriage penalty” (narrower tax brackets for married couples) will return from the first dollar of income. The child tax credit will be cut in half from $1000 to $500 per child. The standard deduction will no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level. The dependent care tax credit will be cut.
The return of the Death Tax. This year, there is no death tax. For those dying on or after January 1 2011, there is a 55 percent top death tax rate on estates over $1 million. A person leaving behind two homes and a retirement account could easily pass along a death tax bill to their loved ones.
Higher tax rates on savers and investors. The top capital gains tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 20 percent in 2011. The top dividends tax rate will rise from 15 percent this year to 39.6 percent in 2011. These rates will rise another 3.8 percent in 2013.
Second Wave: Obamacare
There are over twenty new or higher taxes in Obamacare. Several will first go into effect on January 1, 2011. They include:
The Tanning Tax. This went into effect on July 1st of this year. It imposes a new, 10% excise tax on getting a tan at a tanning salon. There is no exemption for tanners making less than $250,000 per year.
The “Medicine Cabinet Tax” Thanks to Obamacare, Americans will no longer be able to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin).
The HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike. This provision of Obamacare increases the additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10 to 20 percent, disadvantaging them relative to IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts, which remain at 10 percent.
Brand Name Drug Tax. Starting next year, there will be a multi-billion dollar tax assessment imposed on name-brand drug manufacturers. This tax, like all excise taxes, will raise the price of medicine, hurting everyone.
Economic Substance Doctrine. The IRS is now empowered to disallow perfectly-legal tax deductions and maneuvers merely because it judges that the deduction or action lacks “economic substance.” This is obviously an arbitrary empowerment of IRS agents.
Employer Reporting of Health Insurance Costs on a W-2. This will start for W-2s in the 2011 tax year. While not a tax increase in itself, it makes it very easy for Congress to tax employer-provided healthcare benefits later.

Question #14:
I've been a widow for just over a year now. My husband died in Afghanistan. We didn't have any children. My ex mil was hateful to me the whole time I was married to her son. I did my very best to be civil, but nothing ever worked. In the end I just avoided her and her nasty daughter. I just want to be left alone.
I've changed my name, moved back home with my mom, and I'm content with my life now. My ex-mil just won't get the hint that I want NOTHING to do with her. Most of the harassment is from her not receiving all of my husbands life insurance money. She felt she deserved half of it. I would have given her half if she had been civil to me. But I chose to keep my 80%, and let her cry about it. For 6 years she treated me with the malice, hateful, rude, nasty behavior. I didn't do anything to provoke her. She always said that I took her baby boy away from her. Her baby boy was a grown man, and he didn't need mommy's permission to marry me.
I've filed a permanent restraining order from preventing her from contacting me at all. I heard from my one my husbands family members that she's "hurt" about it. Sorry I refuse to let anyone verbally abuse me. I'm just asking. Why won't my ex-mil leave me alone?
Question #15:
We lost the use of our home to fire August 26, 2009. We were insured, All State denied our claim! They claimed we commited arson, they forced me to split up our family, they forced us into a one bedroom apartment, they black mailed us on everything by threatening us with non compliance of policy. They put us through 9 months of sheer hell begging for them to decide one way or another so we could move forward. After I finally informed them we had a public adjustor they within 36 hours denied our claim. Their abuse of us resulted in my father who has Alzheimer's ending up in a nursing home over 500 miles away from us due to all the changes he was subjected to although they knew from day one his health was very fragile! They expected us to be able to rent a place for 4 adults my parents, my husband, myself, and our then 4 year old son, and 3 small pedigree dogs. The temporary accomodations adjustor Heather Stone told me, " We don't care where you go, who you live with, if you have to get seperate houses or kennel your dogs. You have to get out of the motel". There were my elderly parents my mom was on a walker, I am totally disabled. And about 2 weeks before this my husband started passing an enormous amount of blood in his urine along with fist sized blood clots. When I took him to the ER they found a mass in his bladder. None of it mattered. He had surgery October 26, 2009, the 2 days prior to his surgery I had to move my family by myself. Mind you nothing mattered to All State I begged, I pleaded for them to give me until November 9, 2009 to be able to move into a 2 bedroom apartment. The money was there to pay for our additional living expenses! Yet we were forced to split up our family and into a one bedroom apartment. They removed everything we owned from our home, garage, and sunroom! They disposed of, stole, and had our things in an unsecure sight where even more was stolen! And from our furnished 3554 sq. ft. home we ended up with everything left in a 10' X 30' storage unit we have had to pay for. We are paying a mortgage payment that includes insurance payments to All State! They have renewed our policy and were paid from July 31, 2010- July 31, 2011. They get auto paid each month for car and life insurance! We are strapped no furniture no nothing in a dump because we don't want to lose our home. Mind you all our bills were current and the reason of claim is idiotic so much so that a child can see it is nothing but a big sham to commit consumer fraud! Anyone who can help please check out Sakura Jade Esposito on Facebook. I don't want money, I don't want fame, I want our home fixed so we can move on! We can't afford to fix our home, because we have to pay rent on a total dump and on storage fees and keep up all the All State policies! They have been paid every month. What happened was either a defective stove or human error on the cook stove! Please don't keep on going! Just please imagine this your home with your family and you leave for a medical procedure and you come home thinking there was a home invasion, Instead there has been a fire. And from that moment your life turns into a horrible nightmare. The home you were preparing for a new family of adopted siblings is gone. The large family you dreamed of all your life was gone, and your husband a 30 year retired Navy Veteran is accused of causing a fire. By placing matches in a skillet of cooking oil! Only thing is the debris from above the stove is in the pan and the matches directly above the skillets in the cabinet fell at some point onto the debris. UNDERSTAND: ON TOP OF THE DEBRIS! And then they tell a company, " Go ahead get rid of the debris and start demoing." Only to send and adjustor to check the house progress and determine all evidence of the fire has been gutted and removed. Then turn around and the same adjustor claimed he did not give ServPro the authorization to do it. They refuse to pay them and you end up with not only a burnt home but a lien on your burnt home! Then you apply for a 2 bedroom apartment and are denied because you have a mortgage and a new lien on the home for non payment. And your credit is destroyed. How would you feel? No one seems to care to try to help us get the word out. Will you please help us? Thank you...
Question #16:
I got into a car accident the other day. Somebody ran a stop sign and they put a dent in the front of my car. After it happened I freaked out and drove home. The cops came because somebody had reported it. I'm going to court soon and was charged with having no insurance and a hit and run. I also have a drivers permit and was driving alone but I had told the cops that somebody was with me. What can I expect from all of this? I have a little boy and another on the way. I've had my permit for over 4 years and had it renewed a couple times. If I wasn't a good driver I wouldnt be driving by myself, I just havent gotten my lisence yet because I didn't have a car until now. Messy situation.. And as far as I know the car that ran the stop sign never reported anything, so my guess is they weren't supposed to be driving, either..
I live in North Dakota.
Question #17:
Does having a baby effect your home and auto insurance rates?
Question #18:
My mom had a hair in her throat that kept making her gag but she couldn't get it out, so she went to the ER. They couldn't get it either, so sent her to a specialist. The specialist told her that the hair is caught in some kind of pocket in her throat and can only be removed with surgery. If left there, it will become abscessed and eventually prevent her from swallowing or breathing. She doesn't have health insurance and the surgery, once the OR fees and anesthesia and everything are figured in, will cost close to $10,000. She makes only minimum wage and still supports 3 kids at home, so there is no way she can pay that, and I don't make enough money to support myself either. Has anybody even heard of this before? Is there another way to get rid of it without surgery? (Obviously, she has tried self induced vomiting or just coughing it up. Serious answers only, please!)
My mom could die and you're making jokes about sex. That's just great.
No, the hair was in a birthday cake that my little sister made for her.
Question #19:
While Americans with jobs, and contracts go without and they also have liability and insurance which Illegals do not, hang around and these are like 200/300 Mexicans on this street in my neighborhood, they get picked up and for very little cash get the job done and then they go back on the street.
Why does't the government step in and arrest all these people, for being here illegally? I just don't get it. Then the illegal Mexicans get ANGRY when I don't speak SPANISH. EH? Excuse ME? I am in AMERICA and AMERICA speaks English.
Question #20:
Wanted to know, ( survey), what the women thought of having a professional massage at their home or office. I got a lot of great reviews in clinic and was opening my new business and exploring possibilities, thank you for your responses.
